Australia’s economy is stagnant, wages growth is the slowest its been since World War II, interest rates are lower than ever before and the current economic debate still prioritises a surplus over sound economic management.

A big part of what has gone wrong with our political debate comes from a poor economic debate. A debate that is stuck in the past.

I am delighted to announce we have a big new project for 2020: to reclaim an economic debate that is broken.

We’re starting with a national speaking tour featuring our chief economist Richard Denniss.

The tour will kick-off in Canberra on Thursday 28 November, 2019.

The old economic orthodoxies that said cutting taxes and cutting spending are an economic panacea were never true.

The World Bank and the IMF — agencies once at the heart of conservative economic ideology — have produced the evidence to show inequality harms growth.

In Australia, too much of what passes for economic debate has not caught up with this fact.

Investment in education, childcare and public infrastructure — the progressive agenda — is what will drive productivity and help kick-start Australia’s flagging economy.
